Primary years at ULIS
Inspiring a love of learning. IPC from 5 to 11.Learning in Primary is centred around acquiring knowledge and honing the skills, attitudes and dispositions needed to thrive in Middle School and beyond. We aim to inspire confidence in all our students and to develop compassionate learners who take ownership of their learning, think creatively, communicate effectively and understand that they live in an interconnected world.
We are a diverse community of learners, with students from many different cultures and countries, all united in their respect for one another and desire to learn.
We believe that children learn best when they're curious and motivated to ask questions, actively involved in their learning, given time to reflect, explore and make connections, supported to collaborate, take risks and persevere in whatever they are learning. Alongside core curriculum classes, students have weekly classes in PE (sports), music, drama and art.

International Primary Curriculum (IPC)

At the heart of our Primary School is the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), taught in English. Developed by Fieldwork Education, which connects learning through rich, thematic units that bring subjects together in purposeful and exciting ways. Through the IPC, children develop strong academic knowledge alongside important skills such as critical thinking, collaboration and communication, while also building international understanding and personal responsibility.
7 Foundations for Success
The seven foundations of the IPC and IEYC create a dynamic and supportive learning environment that not only imparts knowledge but also fosters essential life skills, values, and attitudes. These elements are crucial for students to succeed in the 21st century.

Curriculum in detail
Languages in Primary
English is the primary language of instruction in Primary School. In addition, children from Grade 1 onwards begin classes in Portuguese, tailored depending on their existing knowledge and ability. For students whose primary language is not English, we offer additional learning (EAL) support.

Learner-led conferences
At the end of a project, children present their findings to classmates and parents in learner-led conferences. Through show and tell, answering questions and explaining their understanding, children deepen their knowledge and retention of information. Learner-led conferences also provide a great way to celebrate both academic and personal progress.
Field trips and excursions

To further enrich our curriculum, students in Primary School have the chance to visit the Lisbon Zoo, Aquarium, attend theatre performances and more. Trips are planned in parallel with the curriculum to support the thematic units.
Learning hubs

Each floor of the school has a learning hub where teachers can take classes to take part in hands-on learning, experiments, read library books, or participate in other activities to better engage the students in their learning. For older children, the learning hubs become spaces to collaborate on projects with classmates.

Welcome from our Primary School Principal
Welcome to Primary at United Lisbon, where learning is engaging, meaningful and centred on the whole child. Our students grow up with confidence, curiosity and independence within a supportive and inclusive environment where every child is known and valued.
We aim to inspire a love of learning by encouraging students to ask questions, explore ideas and take pride in their achievements. Guided by our shared values, we support each child in developing as a capable learner, a thoughtful friend, and a confident global citizen.
