Developing the tools to grow and learn. IYCP from 3 to 5.

We believe in giving our youngest students the best possible start in their learning journey, providing a safe and stimulating environment paired with the care and guidance needed to set them up for a bright future. Classes have a maximum of 18 students and are led by a class teacher with full-time TA support in class.

As an international school taught in English with students from all over the world, we focus on developing a global perspective and intercultural understanding from a young age. We recognise that children develop at different rates and speeds and provide extra opportunities for growth for those who need it, while supporting growth in those who may struggle at times.

In early years, day-to-day learning is organised around themes that relate to real life, such as exploring the places and jobs that make up a town. We explore these activities through reading books, simple maths tasks, telling stories, hands-on play and art. Alongside their study themes, children also have scheduled classes in PE and music. Each term, we head out on an excursion to places such as the Lisbon Aquarium, the Science Museum, or the local farm.

International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC)

Designed specifically for children aged 2 to 5, the IEYC is an innovative curriculum that fosters holistic development by engaging children in meaningful, developmentally appropriate activities that inspire a love for learning and lay a strong foundation for future educational success.

Key learning strands

The IEYC curriculum is organised around four essential learning strands:

Independence and Interdependence.
- Children develop personal and social skills, learning about themselves and how they relate to others.
Communicating.
- Developing early language, literacy and communication skills.
Enquiring.
- Encouraging curiosity, problem-solving, and cognitive development through exploration and investigation.
Physical Well-Being.
- Promoting physical health, well-being, and an understanding of healthy lifestyles.

Learning through play

Our curriculum uses thematic units that provide a context for learning. Each unit is designed to be engaging and relevant, drawing on children’s interests and real-world experiences.

Play is at the heart of the IEYC, recognising its critical role in early childhood development. The curriculum integrates structured play activities and unstructured play opportunities to support various aspects of development.

Our Early Years classes are located in their own section of the school, with outdoor space to play and a dedicated canteen hub. We also have a garden area and mud kitchen where children can get their hands dirty.

A word from our EY coordinator

I believe the best learning happens when children are actively engaged. In the classroom, I love hands-on experiences, whether through art, sensory play, or projects that make a little mess. We aim to foster a sense of independence and a ‘can-do’ attitude that will accompany students throughout their time at school. Outdoor learning, fresh air and nature are a vital part of development too, and we head outside whenever we can make it happen.
